All:

This is update #14 for the Sunset sidewalk project.

Country Landscapes has been on-site the last few days planting trees and starting on sod work.  Based on our conversations with the tree crew and the sod crew, they are anticipating completing their tree and sod work by the end of the day tomorrow.  As mentioned before, they have prescribed watering schedules for both trees and sod that will continue in the following weeks.

Please note that they will be applying a fertilizer to the prepared grade before the initial laying of sod, and applying a second fertilizer application 4 or 5 weeks later after they complete their watering schedule.

The Country Landscapes contractor indicated to us that because of these applications, adjacent residents should not apply additional fertilizer applications until next spring.

Thanks for your time,

      • Oakcrest Panel Repair
        • There is a sunken street panel in the middle of the road between Sunset Street and Mahaska Drive that will be removed and replaced by L.L. Pelling beginning next Tuesday (9/17). below is a map showing the location of the repair and the detour signage that will be placed. We're not sure what time they will be setting up the detour and closing off this section of Oakcrest on Tuesday. It could be first thing in the morning before school/work, or it could take place later in the morning. The expectation is that this repair work will take two days and should be opened back up sometime on Thursday.

This is update #13 for the Sunset Street Wide Sidewalk project.

The remaining work is the restoration items of sod installation, planting of trees, and subsequent watering of both in the weeks following.  We have been holding off on this work due to the hot, dry conditions this month, and have been in communication with the landscape contractor (Country Landscapes) to coordinate the best time to get this work started.  Fortunately, the weather forecasts indicate temperatures returning closer to "average" after this week.  The remaining contract work to be completed and anticipated timeline is as follows:

Beginning next week, we expect to see the general contractor (Vieth Construction)back on-site to finish their rough grading work.  There are still areas that need to be smoothed out and contoured, and some additional dirt along the curbs that needs to be cut down and removed.  The topsoil that has been respread across the site at this time is the same material that was removed from the top 6-inches and stockpiled at the beginning of the project.

After the rough grading work is completed, the landscape contractor will then mobilize with their own equipment to further prepare the subgrade before placing sod.  They will be using tiller type equipment to rip up the soil, remove remaining grass/weed patches, break down dirt clods, and smooth the grade.  They will then be raking (by hand or mechanically) the soil to screen out (collect) all of the larger dirt clods, rocks, debris, etc.  More "hand" work will be required to prepare the soil between the west edge of the sidewalk and adjacent fences and yards.  There will then be a fertilizer treatment applied to the soil before the sod is placed.

After this prep work is concluded, the trees will be planted and mulched, and then sod installed.  We expect this work will occur during the week of Sept. 23-27.  The contractor will begin watering of both trees and sod immediately after installation, and will continue throughout the following weeks.  The landscape contractor indicated they will be using "watering bags" around each tree.  They will complete their required hand watering around each tree, and will also fill up the bag during each visit.  The watering bag slowly releases water to provide additional saturation after leaving the site.

We'll provide another update next week as this remaining work gets underway.
