• Members of Beta Alpha Psi, a UI accounting fraternity, raise money by raking leaves and doing yard work for residents in University Heights. The proceeds are donated to Habitat for Humanity. The students are available Sunday, November 4th from 1:00- 5:00 pm to assist residents right before our leaf vacuum. Donations are free-will, as much or as little as you would like to give. The average donation is $70.00. Any residents interested in this service please email Rosanne Hopson at hopsonrc@gmail.com. • Melrose East Phase 1 repairs begin 8/13/12. Panel repair begins near city office, 1004 Melrose. There will always be two lanes open for east-west traffic, but it will create delays as vehicles slow down traveling through the work zone. During Phase 2 and 3 (several days away yet), left-turns onto Koser will be prohibited.

• The westbound lane of Melrose Avenue between Sunset and Emerald Streets will be closed for street panel repair from Wednesday, Aug. 8 through Sunday, Aug. 12.
  
  Those traveling west on Melrose Avenue will be detoured onto Sunset Street and directed to turn right onto Benton Street and right again on Mormon Trek Boulevard before returning to Melrose Avenue.
  
  There will be no detour for those traveling east on Melrose Avenue, as they will be able to continue through the construction zone.
  
  Melrose Avenue is expected to return to normal traffic by Monday, August 13.

  Take some time to assess your garden for perennials that have become overgrown or need thinning. Or perhaps the conditions in your yard have changed and you need different kinds of plants. Maybe you’re just ready for something new. Good news! You can divide those overgrown plants, get reasonably priced new ones AND benefit the Garden Club, all at the same time.
  
  
   
  More information will be available on the city website at a later date. For now, if you wish, take pictures of plants you plan to divide and save large plastic containers for potting the plants. Long Range Transportation Plan

The Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) of Johnson County is in the process of updating the MPO Long Range Transportation Plan to guide decisions about transportation improvements and funding for the next 25 years. The plan summarizes transportation information for the entire Iowa City Metropolitan Area including University Heights, and Johnson County. The Long Range Transportation Plan will be adopted in May 2012.
In accordance with the adopted 30-day public input process, we are informing you that written input received before April 30 will be forwarded to the MPO Policy Board for their consideration of adopting the plan.

  • City Audit Every 4 years, University Heights, by statute, has to complete an outside audit. Kronlage & Olson of Charles City, IA presented their Audit Report at the January 2012 council meeting. In their summary section (p. 30) they found four material weaknesses of the city. In each case the city's response to the weakness was accepted.
    
  • FY 2013 Budget The budget guidelines for fiscal 2013 (beginning July 1, 2012) are set by state statute. City departments are currently in the process of gathering information for submitting requests for the 2013 budget. These will be discussed at the February 14, 2012 City Council meeting. Final approval of the 2013 budget will occur at the March 13, 2012 City Council meeting. The proposed budget will be posted in advance and a public hearing will be held that night. By law the proposed budget must be submitted to the Iowa Department of Management no later than March 15, 2012.
