Updates to University Heights website:

Updated Streets and Sidewalks page

July 30, 2013

This is the 11th update on the Sunset Street Wide Sidewalk project. Work completed last week included installation of new fire hydrant and valves at the Melrose intersection, removal and grinding of stumps, and grading and backfilling along portions of the sidewalk paved the week before.

This week the contractor reports they will be focusing on preparing the dirt grade on all remaining sections of the sidewalk. This is at the Benton intersection, the Melrose intersection, the north side of the Oakcrest intersection, and a short segment between Highland and Oackrest. They plan to have the paving contractor back on-site at the end of the week to begin setting forms to pave these sections of sidewalk and curb ramps. They will begin paving some sections by Friday if they are ready, otherwise they will be back on-site the following Monday to pour all the remaining sections of sidewalk. They also plan to continue their grading and backfilling work throughout the week, and general site clean-up.

Please let me know if you have any questions, thanks.

    All:

This is the 10th update on the Sunset Street Wide Sidewalk project.  Work completed last week included relocation of one fire hydrant, and paving of several long stretches of sidewalk and curb ramps south of Highland Drive, and south of Oakcrest Avenue.  At the end of last week, work began at the southwest corner of the Melrose/Sunset intersection with removal of existing pavement.

The contractor indicated they will be working on the following items this week:

    1.    Melrose/Sunset corner: relocate fire hydrant, prepare grade, pave new curb ramps and sidewalk connection to the south.
    2.    Remove remaining tree trunks and grind stumps below grade.
    3.    Prepare new curb ramps and sidewalk connection at the northwest corner of Sunset/Oakcrest.
    4.    Prepare grade for new sidewalks and curb ramp at the Benton corner adjacent to the new retaining wall.
    5.    Begin backfilling with dirt and topsoil adjacent to sections of sidewalk that have already been paved.

At this point, the weather forecast for the rest of the week looks promising.  If the contractor can complete these work items by the end of the week, we would expect to see almost all of the paving work complete.  Please let me know if you have any questions, thanks.

      • 7/19/13 Hi neighbors!
Here’s a short update on the University Heights Garden. As you all know, this spring’s yo-yo weather made it hard for many flowers to get a good start. Luckily, they seem to have taken root and are doing pretty well now.
We did have a few surprises in the garden this year. For some unknown reason, we lost all of our well-established mums. If anyone has any ideas on this, we’d love to hear them. On a more positive note, a plethora of pink poppies popped up. At first, we weren’t sure what they were. Weeds? Wildflowers? Unsure of what we had, we let some grow to maturity, and sure enough, they turned out to be pink poppies! There were also a few watermelon plants that unsuccessfully tried to gain a foothold amidst the flowers.
With the help of two kind professors (Carl and Saul), we were able to have a booth at the UH Farmers’ Market in July and raise money for the garden through the sale of veggies and flowers. It was successful enough that we’re planning on doing it again for the rest of the season.
Thanks again to everyone who donated to the UH Garden. Without your help, we wouldn’t be able to enjoy all the cheerful colors in our little corner of University Heights!

        All,

This is the 9th update on the Sunset Street Wide Sidewalk project.  Better progress was made by the contractor last week, and their plans show them working consistently through this week as well.   Through last week, the contractor has used 30 of their allotted 45 "working days."  As of the end of the day Monday (yesterday), completed work included the underground storm sewer installations, and most of the work associated with installing new retaining wall blocks at the Benton Street corner. There were also several phone service lines that Century Link buried at the end of last week.

At our meeting with the contractor this morning, they indicated plans to work on the following items this week:

        1.    Relocate fire hydrant south of Highland Drive.
        2.    Paving contractor to be on-site to continue paving sections of sidewalk south of Highland Drive, and also south curb ramp at Oakcrest Avenue.
        3.    Begin working at the SW corner of the Melrose/Sunset intersection (pavement removal/grading).
        4.    Prepare remaining open sections of the sidewalk alignment by smoothing and compacting the dirt grade in advance of the paving.

Please let me know if you have any questions, thanks.

          All:
This is the 8th update on the Sunset Street Wide Sidewalk project.  Through last week, the contractor has used 26 of their allotted 45 "working days."  There is much work to be done yet to complete the project, and the pace of the construction has been slow the last few weeks in particular.  We notified the contractor last week of our concerns about their pace relative to the work remaining and the number of working days they have remaining in their contract.  We have requested an updated construction schedule from them to confirm how they will be scheduling the remaining work within the timeframe of the project.  We have asked that their schedule be updated and provided this week.

One item that was completed last week was the work by Mid-American.  They have set all their new utility poles, removed the old utility poles, and the overhead services have been relocated to the new poles.

The contractor indicates that planned work this week includes beginning the construction of the new retaining wall (at Sunset/Benton) on Wednesday (7/10) and starting storm sewer work (between Highland and Oakcrest) tomorrow (7/9).  There is a construction meeting scheduled with the contractor for tomorrow morning, and we will ask to hear more specifics of what else they will be working on during the week.  We will send out another update tomorrow if additional items are scheduled.

Please let me know if you have any questions, thanks.
